I agree with Aisu completely. She said pretty much what I was thinking; that because both are made by the Ancients, they have to be able to withstand the "kawoosh". I also agree with the fact that the kawoosh doesn't actually take up the whole diameter of the gate.
Subject: Re: MAJOR Stargate goof throughout both series
Its not the kawoosh thats in question its the wormhole field that does extend to the edges.

darn I was reading a really nifty wikipedia article about this yesterday I'll find it and post it later.
Subject: Re: MAJOR Stargate goof throughout both series
You're right, it does extend to the edges but it has been stated more than a few times on the show that matter cought in the kawoosh is disintigrated, not the entire field.
Subject: Re: MAJOR Stargate goof throughout both series
yes but matter still has to react with the field itself otherwise they wouldnt get teleported anywhere.
Subject: Re: MAJOR Stargate goof throughout both series
Ok, that is a good point. I guess the only other question then is - Does the outer diameter of a forming wormhole, excluding the kawoosh, interact with matter the same way the kawoosh does? Or does that simply server no purpose until the wormhole is fully active? I suppose that may have been two questions. :?
Subject: Re: MAJOR Stargate goof throughout both series
The part that we see during the "kawoosh" is not part of the dimolecularization process. It's simply an unstable wormhole event horizon, finding its boundaries, in this case the gate and part of the floor, before becoming stable. Remember what it looks like when a gate gets "unstable," and the blue isn't solid, and kind of flickers? The outer edges of the event horizon during the "kawoosh" do the exact same thing. So, again, there isn't really anything there. Just like a wormhole isn't really there. The event horizon is the optical illusion that gives us a perception of where we begin the demolecularization process.
